Understanding how your music makes money can be complex. Here are the answers to the most common questions our clients ask about publishing and royalty collection.
A Songwriter is the creator of the melody and lyrics (the “composition”). A Music Publisher (or Administrator) is the business entity that manages those copyrights, ensures the songs are registered globally, and collects the royalties earned whenever those songs are played, performed, or sold.
These are earned when your music is played in public. This includes:
Radio and TV broadcasts.
Live performances (concerts, festivals, or background music in a restaurant).
Digital Streaming (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.).
In South Africa, these are primarily collected and distributed by SAMRO.
Mechanical royalties are earned whenever your music is “reproduced” in a physical or digital format. This includes:
Digital Downloads and Physical CD/Vinyl sales.
Interactive Streaming (every time someone hits “play” on a streaming service).
In South Africa, these are primarily managed by CAPASSO.
No. Unlike traditional publishing deals where you might sign over 50% of your “Publisher’s Share” forever, Morgeez provides Administration Services. This means you retain 100% ownership of your copyrights. We simply act as your authorized representative to collect your money for a small administrative fee.
Distributors primarily focus on the Master Recording (the actual audio file). They collect royalties for the performer and the label. However, they often do not collect the Publishing Royalties (for the underlying composition) from global societies. An administrator ensures that you, as the songwriter, are paid every cent you are owed from all global sources.
Royalty collection is a slow process due to how global societies operate. It typically takes 6 to 9 months after registration for the first domestic royalties to appear, and 12 to 18 months for international royalties to flow through the system.
A split sheet is a simple document signed by all contributors to a song that defines who owns what percentage. Without a signed split sheet, we cannot accurately register your music, which can lead to “conflicted” royalties that are held in escrow (unpaid) until the dispute is resolved.
The Morgeez Music Streaming portal is coming soon. Having been lost in the ocean of DSPs for all these years, we thought it’s time we get real with our clients, fans and people of the world that have taste for good music and appetite for music that motivates and inspires.
